SUMMARY:Online: The Printed Vision- Making a Fine Art Print
DESCRIPTION:Presentation: Thursday December 9th\, 7-8pm • Online! \nPrinted Image Review: Thursday December 16th\, 6-8pm • In our Hunt’s Melrose store or Online! \nRecommended prerequisite: An interest in printing (But you do NOT need a printer!) \nInstructor: Paul Nelson \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run.\nAbout The Printed Vision Series\nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product\, which is the purpose behind the Printed Vision Series.\nEach Printed Vision topic will meet for two sessions. In the first session\, we will discuss the topic and elaborate on editing with examples. This will include discussion of exposure\, dynamic range and color\, but also deeper points\, such as noise reduction\, image sharpening and grain. In between sessions 1 and 2\, attendees will independently process 1-2 images and submit them to the instructor for printing. We will print one of the two images leading into the second session and discuss some of the challenges we face in printing them.\nYou do not need to produce a new image for this class and can go into your archives to print\, but you are welcome to go out into the field and create something new based on the topic! \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Making a Fine Art Print \nTo print fine art or not to print fine art: That is the question. What does it mean to make a fine art print? What photographic papers define fine art? What editing choices should we make to get through the emotions of the print? How do we calculate our editing with our paper choices?\nIn this class\, we will discuss the answers to these questions in our instructional online presentation\, held on the first date\, then workshop your images in order to make a fine art print. We will reconvene the following week for our Printed Image Review. You will have that time period in between to edit and submit your images. In the end\, you will receive a fine art print of your edited image up to 13×19″ in size. (Please note: The cost of a 12×18 or 13×19 print on fine art paper is $35-$40; the cost of this class includes the cost of that print!)\nRemember\, tis the season\, and we don’t need to “buy buy buy” in order to give a wonderfully creative gift. Consider creating a fine art print and giving that to a friend or loved one! We will also discuss framing options and how that plays into the holidays.\nJoin us for this quintessential Printed Vision class! \nReceiving Your Print\nAfter the class\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 24 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don’t worry about taking unending notes. We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. \nRegister here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up.

SUMMARY:Flash! Blending Available Light with Your Speedlights
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 4th\, 9am-2pm • Melrose\, MA \nFeaturing best practices on how to best use your speedlight on and off the camera \nRecommended prerequisite: Working knowledge of your camera We also recommend having some of the knowledge from our Beginner Photography class \nAll Skill Levels Welcome \nInstructors: Paul Nelson \nClass Size: Maximum 10 attendees \nWorkshop Description\nSpeedlights (aka “flashes”) are truly awesome tools in photography. Where there is no light\, we can create it. The problem is most speedlight owners struggle with settings\, the direction of the flash\, and how to get everything to look as you want it to! This is most evident at family gatherings and events: The lights are low and therefore the flash (when used improperly) is even more jarring! How can we eliminate that “deer in the headlights” look?\nNever fear! In this workshop\, we will teach you how to blend the speedlight with available light to create stunning results! We will simplify speedlights\, camera settings\, and teach you some of the essential basics to using your speedlight for family gatherings\, events\, and even still-life! Whether you are in a living space with a few spare lamps on or a large event space\, we will spell out the tools to get the job done. We will also work with the flash on and off-the-camera to show the variety of options there are! Since it is the holiday season and the season of lights\, we will emphasize scenarios that are common during the holidays\, working first with still life\, then portraits. \nThis will be a great learning experience for anyone looking to get practice with your speedlight! We recommend you have a speedlight for this workshop. Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nCOVID-19 Policies for Hunt’s Photo Walks and Workshops\nMasks will be required in our classroom. Please make sure to bring one.\nAs always\, if you are sick or feeling unwell\, STAY HOME! We will gladly give you a credit towards a future walk. \nRegister Here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n \nIf you are attending this walk\, we will send out more specific instructions to you a few days prior to the walk. Please note: Some slight details above can be subject to change. This email will detail any of those minor changes.\nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up. \nDress and Gear \n•A standard zoom lens is a good starting point\n•You are welcome to bring your own flash and light modifier (soft box\, etc)\, or you may use what we have\n•You will not need a tripod\n•Feel free to bring snacks and water.\n•Bring an extra camera battery and memory cards.\n•As always\, bring your enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

These workshops are designed to help you create\, compose\, and photograph stellar mini-holiday masterpieces. Photographers that participate in these workshops will also have one of their holiday photographs printed 13×19″ and hung in the Hunt’s Photo Gallery in Melrose for the month of December. (More details below.)\nWe will begin each workshop with a demo that will discuss camera settings\, lighting\, composition\, subject placement\, and more. You will then create and photograph your compositions for the remainder of the time during the workshop\, with instructor assistance available. Our ultimate goal in this workshop is at least one “final piece” that can be printed on a large scale.\nAfter the workshop\, attendees will edit and process their images on their own and upload 1-2 images to the instructors for review. We will review those images\, individually discuss your processing choices and make suggestions for additional edits\, then print the images as 13×19″. These photographs will be hung in our Hunt’s Photo Gallery in Melrose for the month of December\, after which you will be given the print. We will conclude these workshops on Tuesday November 30th with a printed image review.\nBut wait… There’s more! In addition to all of this\, we will also create a holiday card for you on a Moab Entrada Folding Card. While this may seem like a very small item\, these cards are stunning– as much in importance as the large scale print!\nThis will be a fun and challenging workshop that will walk you through the full process of creating stellar holiday macro imagery. We will stay with you during the editing process\, and even guide you in understanding the best processing for a final print. Join us for one of our favorite workshops of the year! \nUpdated COVID-19 Policies for indoor Hunt’s Photo Walks and Workshops\nAt this time\, Hunt’s Photo Education will require face masks for this workshop.\nThis workshop will take place in our Hunt’s Photo Melrose classroom. We have limited the amount of attendees in order to give ample space to each attendee. We also ask that you maintain social distance whenever possible.\nAs always\, if you are sick or feeling unwell\, STAY HOME! We will gladly give you a credit towards a future walk. \nRegister here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n\nIf you are attending this workshop\, we will send out more specific instructions to you a few days prior to the workshop. Please note: Some slight details above can be subject to change. This email will detail any of those minor changes. \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up. \nGear \n•A Macro lens will be your best lens of choice for this workshop. Remember\, we have a rental department at rentals.huntsphoto.com\n•Alternatively\, you could consider a prime lens (ex 50mm) or a long telephoto zoom lens\, but macro is still best\n•Macro filters or extension tubes could also work\n•For this workshop\, we always recommend bringing holiday items that are special to you. Trinkets\, ornaments\, toys\, or anything holiday-related is recommended. We will also have a large collection of items\, but if you have something of your own\, consider bringing it. Just remember- it should be small\, so don’t bring a 2-foot teddy bear unless you want to photograph it very close-up.\n•Make sure to bring your tripod with a quick release plate and a shutter release\, if you have one.\n•Feel free to bring snacks and water\n•Bring an extra camera battery and memory cards.\n•As always\, bring your enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

Join Hunt’s Photo Education and our guest instructor– Media Instructor and Yearbook Advisor Jim Valente from Malden High School– for a week-long photography program aimed at strengthening their interest\, improving their photography\, and getting them truly excited about being the artist\, the creator\, and the family photographer! \nOver the course of five days\, we will cover a wide range of topics\, from composition & perspective to depth of field & movement. Every day we’ll have a brief introduction to a topic followed by a fun practical exercise. Our goal is to get your photographers outside and taking pictures as much as possible! (Inside on rainy days\, too.) At the end of the day\, we’ll look back on the images to see what we liked about them. And at the end of the week\, we’ll print and display images from all of our students in our Hunt’s Photo Gallery for all to see. \nOur goal in this program is to have a lot of fun and not bog students down with too much technical stuff. However\, we will also scaffold instruction\, so if an attendee wants to know more about the technical aspects\, they still can! \nStudents will be required to have some kind of camera. This can be a cell phone\, a point and shoot camera\, or a DSLR/mirrorless camera. Pretty much any camera that works is acceptable! (A film camera could also work\, but be advised it will be more time and cost to develop the film\, so it may not be the best choice for this program.) \nThis will be a fun week with experienced instruction. We look forward to seeing you there! \n*A few notes about our recommended age requirements*\nOur age requirement is very general. A certain maturity level is helpful. Younger children with interest and a level of responsibility are welcome to attend. As we mention\, we will scaffold instruction for any age range.\nAll parents/guardians will need to sign off on a permission slip to attend this course. Our classes will be held in our Hunt’s Photo\, Melrose store and classroom\, and surrounding outdoor areas\, including Pine Banks Park. We assure you that your student will be in a safe and fun environment. If you have any questions\, please feel free to contact us at classes@huntsphoto.com. \nUpdated COVID-19 Policies on Masks and Social Distancing \nHunt’s Photo Education is aligning with CDC and state guidelines. We no longer require face masks for our indoor classes. We ask that attendees maintain social distance. If attendees would prefer to wear a mask\, they are welcome to do so. \nRegister here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up. \nWhat to bring\n•Students will be required to have some kind of camera. This can be a cell phone\, a point and shoot camera\, or a DSLR/mirrorless camera. Pretty much any camera that works is acceptable!\n•Please make sure whatever camera they bring has a fully charged battery and a memory card\, if necessary.\n•We encourage bringing a snack and water\, but not a full lunch\, as we will be ending by noon\n•As always\, have them bring their enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

SUMMARY:Beyond the Basics- Sports\, Camera\, Action!- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:To photograph sports is similar to the sport itself\, pushing the limits of your camera and lens. A knowledge of focusing\, exposure\, depth of field\, composition\, and more make for more thought-provoking sports photographs. Above all\, photographing sports takes practice\, control\, concentration\, and a knowledge of the goal.\nIn photographing\, not every sport is created equal (for settings)! There are sports in bright\, mid-day sun; there are sports indoors under a fluorescent\, high school “sky”; there are sports with black backgrounds and sports with white backgrounds. How do we compensate in each scenario?\nIn this seminar-based class\, we will discuss many of these topics for a variety of different scenarios and sports\, including basketball\, football\, hockey\, cross-country\, and more. Topics of discussion will include:\n-Basic camera settings\n-Auto-Focusing modes and settings\n-Lens options\n-Thinking out of the Box! \nPlease note: This class is a seminar-based class that will be discussing settings and options\, and not in-the-field. This class is recommended as a prerequisite to any of our Sports Photo Walks. \n \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up.

SUMMARY:Editing Using Capture One- Exposure\, Layer\, Color Grading\, & More- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:Capture One is one of the most popular and professional photo editing softwares on the market. It’s a complete photo editor that allows for extensive color editing\, the ability to work with layers in an image\, tethered shooting\, and more in a fairly easy-to-use package! Capture One also boasts extensive camera and lens profiles for many brands\, emphasizing not just Canon and Nikon\, but also Fuji\, Sony and others.\nIn this course we will learn:\n•General program layout\n•Basics of exposure controls\n•Layers- what they are\, how and when to use them\n•Color editing tools\n•Spot Removal Tool\n•Tethering basics \nCome join us as we explore this fascinating program! \nWhy choose Capture One vs. Adobe Lightroom? This program can be seen as an addition to or replacement for Adobe Lightroom. Capture One’s interface focuses on processing of images without having to create catalogs of images\, allowing one to focus primarily on what’s important in images: Exposure\, spot correction\, color\, and more. Capture One’s biggest advantage over Lightroom is its robust color processing capabilities\, which allow one to work in a straightforward way to properly render color. Capture One is also one of the few professional photo editing softwares that is available to purchase\, rather than Adobe’s leasing with monthly payments. But rest assured- We’re not biased! Our instructors have both Capture One and Lightroom! \nWe recommend bringing a laptop for this class with Capture One Pro 12 installed. Please be advised: Capture One Pro 12 is the only version we recommend for this class. Please make sure the program is downloaded and make sure you can open it prior to arriving. Note:The other major version of this program\, Capture One Express\, does not offer the same editing capabilities (specifically the inability to work with Layers). We are happy to work with you in a 1-on-1 environment\, as this class will likely not be suitable for Express. \nTo register in Melrose\n \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up.

SUMMARY:Capture to Print: Flowers & Macro
DESCRIPTION:Printing your photos will make you a better photographer. The first step to creating a great print is by understanding how to create a great photograph in the field.\nCapture-To-Print is an intermediate workshop that focuses not only on photography\, but also editing and printing! Half photo workshop\, half editing and printing\, we will take you through the whole process–from Capture to Print— to demonstrate what is important in the field\, how to effectively process photos\, and why printing is a necessity.\nOur process for this Capture to Print workshop will be a little different from our previous workshops. We will begin in our Melrose classroom with lighting setups and a variety of flowers\, which we will photograph over the course of the morning. We will transition from photographing to editing in the early afternoon. Attendees are encouraged to bring their computers–laptops or all-in-ones are fine (iMacs are welcome)–in order to do their own editing. Attendees should have Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop\, or a comparable program on their computer. We will be available to help with the processing of images during this time. We will then view these edits\, critique\, and discuss them with the rest of the class while also creating 13×19″ prints.\nThis will be a fun and challenging workshop that will walk you through the full process of creating a photograph. The process of printing is integral to developing one’s photographic vision. \nApproximate schedule for the day:\n9am- Introductions\, discussion of lighting and macro techniques\n10am- Photographing of flowers\, macro\n12pm- Begin editing (Attendees are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch and take a short break during this time)\n2pm- Review\, critique\, and printing \n\nIf you are attending this workshop\, we will send out more specific instructions to you a few days prior to the workshop. Please note: Some slight details above can be subject to change. This email will detail any of those minor changes.\nIf you have specific flowers that you would like to bring to photograph\, you are welcome to bring them as well. \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up.
