SUMMARY:Flash! Blending Available Light with Your Speedlights
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 4th\, 9am-2pm • Melrose\, MA \nFeaturing best practices on how to best use your speedlight on and off the camera \nRecommended prerequisite: Working knowledge of your camera We also recommend having some of the knowledge from our Beginner Photography class \nAll Skill Levels Welcome \nInstructors: Paul Nelson \nClass Size: Maximum 10 attendees \nWorkshop Description\nSpeedlights (aka “flashes”) are truly awesome tools in photography. Where there is no light\, we can create it. The problem is most speedlight owners struggle with settings\, the direction of the flash\, and how to get everything to look as you want it to! This is most evident at family gatherings and events: The lights are low and therefore the flash (when used improperly) is even more jarring! How can we eliminate that “deer in the headlights” look?\nNever fear! In this workshop\, we will teach you how to blend the speedlight with available light to create stunning results! We will simplify speedlights\, camera settings\, and teach you some of the essential basics to using your speedlight for family gatherings\, events\, and even still-life! Whether you are in a living space with a few spare lamps on or a large event space\, we will spell out the tools to get the job done. We will also work with the flash on and off-the-camera to show the variety of options there are! Since it is the holiday season and the season of lights\, we will emphasize scenarios that are common during the holidays\, working first with still life\, then portraits. \nThis will be a great learning experience for anyone looking to get practice with your speedlight! We recommend you have a speedlight for this workshop. Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nCOVID-19 Policies for Hunt’s Photo Walks and Workshops\nMasks will be required in our classroom. Please make sure to bring one.\nAs always\, if you are sick or feeling unwell\, STAY HOME! We will gladly give you a credit towards a future walk. \nRegister Here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n \nIf you are attending this walk\, we will send out more specific instructions to you a few days prior to the walk. Please note: Some slight details above can be subject to change. This email will detail any of those minor changes.\nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up. \nDress and Gear \n•A standard zoom lens is a good starting point\n•You are welcome to bring your own flash and light modifier (soft box\, etc)\, or you may use what we have\n•You will not need a tripod\n•Feel free to bring snacks and water.\n•Bring an extra camera battery and memory cards.\n•As always\, bring your enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Speedlights 101 and Beyond!
DESCRIPTION:Recommended prerequisite: \nBasic understanding of Aperture\, Shutter\, ISO & What Exposure is \nYou should have a speedlight\, aka a flash that is detachable from your camera \nFlash triggers are helpful\, but not a necessity \nInstructor: Paul Nelson \nClass Size: Limited to 10-15 attendees \nClass Level: Basic \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for a new Multi-Session Series session. In our Multi-Session Series\, we will meet over the course of a number of weeks\, generally at the same time each week. During that time\, we will discuss a specific element of a topic and end the session by giving a photographic assignment. That assignment will be due for completion before the next class meeting\, and we will review those images at the start of the next session. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure!\nOur Multi-Session Series is designed to “keep the conversation going” by engaging with our attendees in a more personal way. In each of these classes\, we will have 10-15 attendees and provide direct feedback on images. We encourage photographers of all skill levels to consider these classes\, as they will build upon your experience and provide an excellent chance to work on your imagery! \nSpeedlights 101 and Beyond!\nThis class is all about two things: Learning how to use the basics of your flash on the camera and how (and why) to take the flash off the camera.\nJoin Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson as we discuss how to take pictures using a speedlight\, and make them look great\, no matter what the situation. We will discuss photographing people\, but also photographing product and flashes work. We’ll talk all about the basics\, including modes\, settings\, and more!\nWhether you own a flash and have no idea how to use it\, you want to take great photos at functions and family events that are in low light\, or you just want to learn how to add a flash into your repertoire\, this course is for you! \nIn week one\, we will look at the basic camera and flash settings when using the flash on the camera\, including light positioning. In week two\, we will get a bit more creative by adding in diffusion and reflectors. We will also work to refine flash positioning and camera settings to maximize efficiency. In week three\, we will demonstrate taking the flash off-camera and show some of the benefits of doing that. In week four\, we will tie together the whole process\, including how to properly edit photos. \nEach week we will have a general presentation and discussion about a topic and will present an assignment. You can submit for the assignment or just watch our weekly critiques of others–it’s up to you! We will also supplement the class with additional instructional videos. \nYou don’t need to know the inner workings of your flash to take this class! Photographers of all levels should apply\, even those at a basic level\, as we will cascade the learning process. You should have a speedlight\, aka a flash that is detachable from your camera. Flash triggers can be helpful. A reflector may also be helpful. Note: This is not a class about the on-board flash on your camera. In general\, we never recommend using the on-board flash (unless you absolutely have to). \nPhotographers should have an understanding of their camera and general exposure before taking this class. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 48 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \nLayout of the class\nThe class will begin promptly at the time listed. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure! During each class\, you are welcome to type in questions in the Question box if you have specific questions as they are asked. We will do our best to answer those questions\, but if not\, feel free to ask them at the end. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don’t worry about taking unending notes. We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. In addition to this\, we will generally send out a PDF of the presentation (when applicable) and handouts on the topic. If handouts and PDFs are included\, we will send it out with the link for the video. \nNo online classes should be shared and cannot be shared in a public environment\, including with camera clubs\nThe online content is the copyright of Hunt’s Photo Education and/or the Instructor. Please support our education team and instructors by not sharing this material! We appreciate your support\, and it’s thanks to that support that we are able to continue producing content! \nRegister here\n***Having trouble registering? We will emphasize creating portraits using available light through subject placement and composition through the aid of diffusers and reflectors. We will then separately demonstrate reasons to add in flash. \nWe will begin photographing mid-day in the sunlight (and shade) and work to sunset. We will then utilize lower light techniques and photograph during twilight for some spectacular portrait results! \nFor this workshop\, you are welcome to bring your own flashes and light modifiers (soft boxes\, etc)\, but you also can use what we have with us as well. Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nFor our meeting location\, we have chosen downtown Haverhill\, Massachusetts. With a variety of brick buildings and urban environments\, downtown Haverhill (or any downtown area) can offer a wonderful variety of shooting environments. This workshop will help emphasize those capabilities. \nA Guideline for Photo Walks during the era of COVID-19 \nHunt’s Photo Education remains dedicated to the health and safety of every single attendee\, student\, and customer\, first and foremost. SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Speedlights 101 and Beyond!
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a new Multi-Session Series session.
