We will emphasize creating portraits using available light through subject placement and composition through the aid of diffusers and reflectors. We will then separately demonstrate reasons to add in flash. \nWe will begin photographing mid-day in the sunlight (and shade) and work to sunset. We will then utilize lower light techniques and photograph during twilight for some spectacular portrait results! \nFor this workshop\, you are welcome to bring your own flashes and light modifiers (soft boxes\, etc)\, but you also can use what we have with us as well. Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nFor our meeting location\, we have chosen downtown Haverhill\, Massachusetts. With a variety of brick buildings and urban environments\, downtown Haverhill (or any downtown area) can offer a wonderful variety of shooting environments. This workshop will help emphasize those capabilities. \nA Guideline for Photo Walks during the era of COVID-19 \nHunt’s Photo Education remains dedicated to the health and safety of every single attendee\, student\, and customer\, first and foremost. We also are committed to the best possible learning experience. We have put forth rules and guidelines for Photo Walks that occur during the era of COVID.\n•We will have no more than 6-8 attendees per Photo Walk with a single instructor\n•We ask that all attendees wear a mask. We will gladly give you credit towards a future walk!\nThese guidelines will stay in place until further notice. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. If you have any questions\, feel free to contact us at classes@huntsphoto.com. \nRegister Here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n \nIf you are attending this walk\, we will send out more specific instructions to you a few days prior to the walk. This email will detail any of those minor changes.\nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up. \nDress and Gear \n•Make sure to dress accordingly with the most current weather report.\n•Wear good walking shoes!\n•A standard zoom lens is a good starting point\n•Portrait lenses range from 85mm to 130mm. Those lenses are recommended\n•You may choose a wider lens\, such as a 35mm or 50mm\, but be aware they will include more of the background\n•You are welcome to bring your own flash and light modifier (soft box\, etc)\, or you may use what we have\n•Feel free to bring reflectors\n•You may bring a tripod\, but only bring what you want to carry\n•Feel free to bring snacks and water.\n•Bring an extra camera battery and memory cards.\n•As always\, bring your enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Speedlights 101 and Beyond!
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a new Multi-Session Series session. In our Multi-Session Series\, we will meet over the course of a number of weeks\, generally at the same time each week. During that time\, we will discuss a specific element of a topic and end the session by giving a photographic assignment. That assignment will be due for completion before the next class meeting\, and we will review those images at the start of the next session. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure!\nOur Multi-Session Series is designed to “keep the conversation going” by engaging with our attendees in a more personal way. In each of these classes\, we will have 10-15 attendees and provide direct feedback on images. We encourage photographers of all skill levels to consider these classes\, as they will build upon your experience and provide an excellent chance to work on your imagery! \nSpeedlights 101 and Beyond!\nThis class is all about two things: Learning how to use the basics of your flash on the camera and how (and why) to take the flash off the camera.\nJoin Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson as we discuss how to take pictures using a speedlight\, and make them look great\, no matter what the situation. We will discuss photographing people\, but also photographing product and flashes work. We’ll talk all about the basics\, including modes\, settings\, and more!\nWhether you own a flash and have no idea how to use it\, you want to take great photos at functions and family events that are in low light\, or you just want to learn how to add a flash into your repertoire\, this course is for you! \nIn week one\, we will look at the basic camera and flash settings when using the flash on the camera\, including light positioning. In week two\, we will get a bit more creative by adding in diffusion and reflectors. We will also work to refine flash positioning and camera settings to maximize efficiency. In week three\, we will demonstrate taking the flash off-camera and show some of the benefits of doing that. In week four\, we will tie together the whole process\, including how to properly edit photos. \nEach week we will have a general presentation and discussion about a topic and will present an assignment. You can submit for the assignment or just watch our weekly critiques of others–it’s up to you! We will also supplement the class with additional instructional videos. \nYou don’t need to know the inner workings of your flash to take this class! Photographers of all levels should apply\, even those at a basic level\, as we will cascade the learning process. You should have a speedlight\, aka a flash that is detachable from your camera. Flash triggers can be helpful. A reflector may also be helpful. Note: This is not a class about the on-board flash on your camera. In general\, we never recommend using the on-board flash (unless you absolutely have to). \nPhotographers should have an understanding of their camera and general exposure before taking this class. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 48 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \nLayout of the class\nThe class will begin promptly at the time listed. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure! During each class\, you are welcome to type in questions in the Question box if you have specific questions as they are asked. We will do our best to answer those questions\, but if not\, feel free to ask them at the end. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don’t worry about taking unending notes. We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. In addition to this\, we will generally send out a PDF of the presentation (when applicable) and handouts on the topic. If handouts and PDFs are included\, we will send it out with the link for the video. \nNo online classes should be shared and cannot be shared in a public environment\, including with camera clubs\nThe online content is the copyright of Hunt’s Photo Education and/or the Instructor. Please support our education team and instructors by not sharing this material! We appreciate your support\, and it’s thanks to that support that we are able to continue producing content! \n \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up.

SUMMARY:Online: Creative Movement and Motion in Still Life

Join Hunt’s Photo Educators Emily Hojnowski and Paul Nelson who will demonstrate how to create movement and motion in still life\, food photography\, and more! In this class\, we will be using flash to freeze or emphasize movement. We will discuss the technical and creative elements through Live Demos\, and discuss the applicable lighting techniques. These concepts can also be used in a variety of other everyday situations and are not limited to the studio.\nPlease note: In this class\, we will be using flash for our demos and many of the techniques can only be achieved by using flash.

SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Creative Flash Off-Camera for Outdoor Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Below the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for our new Multi-Session Series. \nCreative Flash Off-Camera for Outdoor Portraits\nUsing a flash when photographing portraits outside can prove to be an extremely effective method of creating beautiful portraits. But how do we use flash off-camera and under what circumstances? Where do we place the subject in relation to the natural light\, where do we place the flash\, and what sort of diffusers do we need? Finally\, what settings do we need for the flash and what settings do we need for the camera? \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education as we continue our Multi-Session Series with portraits and flash! In this class\, we will answer the above questions and more through a series of presentations\, discussions\, critiques\, and assignments. \nIn week one\, we will look at where and when we can integrate flash into our photographs\, as well as how to effectively work it in with flash settings and positioning and camera settings. In week two\, we will look back at images from week 1 and discuss editing techniques. We will work to refine flash positioning and subject posing to maximize effectiveness. In week three\, we will work on alternative flash positioning\, integrating a flash in as a secondary or effect light and on additional techniques\, such as high-speed sync. In week four\, we will tie together the whole process\, from setup to photograph to editing to finalized images. \nEach week we will have a general presentation and discussion about a topic and will present an assignment. You can submit for the assignment or just watch our weekly critiques of others–it’s up to you! We will also supplement the class with additional instructional videos AND lighting diagrams (for test shots) which we will discuss in class. \nYou don’t need to be a professional to take this course\, or even know advanced concepts of Photoshop\, nor the inner workings of your flash. Photographers of all levels should apply\, as we will cascade the learning process. We do recommend having either Adobe Lightroom or Capture One editing software\, as well as Adobe Photoshop; if you plan to submit images\, you should have flash triggers; a reflector will also be helpful.\nPhotographers should have an understanding of exposure before taking this class.

SUMMARY:Online: Light Painting Basics
DESCRIPTION:In response to COVID-19 and recommendations by the CDC of social distancing\, Hunt’s Photo Education is presenting our new series of online classes! These courses will be shorter (about 1 hour)\, online versions of many classes that we currently offer\, plus a few new ones\, and include Q&A at the end.\nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nIt’s relatively easy to shoot when you have a whole bunch of light\, but when the sun goes down and the lights go out things change? Light Painting is the process of adding artificial light to another otherwise dark scene. This can be painting with light in a pattern\, or simply adding light to an area of your shot that is dark and in need of light. Light Painting is a fun and challenging technique to stretch your creativity. In the seminar\, join Hunt’s Photo Educator Otha Sonnie and learn the basics of bringing things to light\, in the dark! \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. SUMMARY:Online: Setting Up the Home Portrait Studio
DESCRIPTION:In response to COVID-19 and recommendations by the CDC of social distancing\, Hunt’s Photo Education is presenting our new series of online classes! (Hey! We wanted to do it anyway\, this just sped up the process!) These courses will be shorter (about 1 hour)\, online versions of many classes that we currently offer\, plus a few new ones\, and include Q&A at the end.\nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nWe often receive questions about what is important to have in a home portrait studio. During our portrait workshops (and when time allows)\, we often like to set everything up with the attendees to get an idea of what we are using and why we are using it. We will answer these questions\, as well as:\n•The importance of multiple lights\n•What lenses to use\n•Where to place the subject and backgrounds\n•Studio strobes vs. speedlights\n•On-brand vs. off-brand speedlights\n•The purpose of a square softbox vs an octobox\n•Softboxes vs. umbrellas\n•Triggers & Light meters\n•What other important elements you should have in the studio \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson as we discuss the basic elements of setting up a home portrait studio! One should never feel limited by creativity\, and often working with lighting gear\, folks feel disoriented. Let us help take away some of the mystery! \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. SUMMARY:Online: Lighting for Headshots
\nThe saying “It’s all about the light”\, could not be truer for photography. If you have great light\, there is a good chance of a great image. But what is great light\, how to make the best of the available light\, and what if you could have absolute control over the light? \nJoin us for a survey course in lighting\, with an emphasis on lighting for headshots. Discussed will be Quality of Light\, how to recognize it\, and how to control and modify it. We’ll start with available light\, how to control it with reflectors\, and how to augment it with camera flash. \nThen we will discuss how to take complete control of the lighting with studio grade lighting\, revisiting Quality of Light\, discussing the size of the light\, the direction of the light\, and the color of the light. Starting with one light\, then adding a second\, then third\, to achieve just the look you want. \nThe beauty of using studio flash is once you find the look or looks you like\, they are repeatable. Instead of worrying about lighting you can concentrate on posing and expressions. So\, the next time a portrait opportunity comes along requiring studio lighting\, instead of declining saying “I’m an available light photographer”\, say “Great\, lets schedule a date”. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that you have signed up. About 24 hours prior to the class time\, we will send out an email with the weblink for you to follow as well as information on how to access the class online. (It’s pretty easy\, but we’ll walk you through it in a quick online video!) \nLayout of the class\nThe class will begin promptly at the time listed. The majority of the class–roughly 1 hour– will be a presentation on the topic\, followed by a short Q&A. During the class\, you are welcome to type in questions in the Chat box if you have specific questions as they are asked.
