Whether the photographer utilizes light\, negative space or depth of field\, capturing a variety of unique compositions can create a visually stunning bird portfolio. In this class\, Cameron will explain how to create a thoughtful image that tells a bird’s story. He will share descriptions and image examples highlighting various techniques for becoming a more creative bird photographer. \nAbout Cameron: Cameron Darnell is a 19-year-old wildlife photographer and birder specializing in bird photography. He lives outside of Washington\, D.C.\, and will be attending Williams College in the fall of 2021. Cameron has been birding for as long as he can remember\, and began photographing birds at the age of 12. He finds the creative aspect of bird photography thrilling and always strives for the most aesthetic image possible. Cameron has led bird walks in the Mid-Atlantic region\, and conducted bird photography workshops throughout the United States. Cameron’s images will be featured in the Spring 2021 issue of the Smithsonian Institute’s publication IMPACT. His images have been honored by the National Audubon Society Photography Awards (Top 100)\, the Massachusetts Audubon Society Photography Contest (Winner\, Youth Division)\, and the American Birding Association Young Birder of the Year Contest (Winner\, Photography Contest). In 2019\, he was selected to attend The Cornell Lab of Ornithology Young Birders Event.\nYou can view more of Cameron’s images and learn more about him here. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Speedlights 101 and Beyond!
DESCRIPTION:Recommended prerequisite: \nBasic understanding of Aperture\, Shutter\, ISO & What Exposure is \nYou should have a speedlight\, aka a flash that is detachable from your camera \nFlash triggers are helpful\, but not a necessity \nInstructor: Paul Nelson \nClass Size: Limited to 10-15 attendees \nClass Level: Basic \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for a new Multi-Session Series session. In our Multi-Session Series\, we will meet over the course of a number of weeks\, generally at the same time each week. During that time\, we will discuss a specific element of a topic and end the session by giving a photographic assignment. That assignment will be due for completion before the next class meeting\, and we will review those images at the start of the next session. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure!\nOur Multi-Session Series is designed to “keep the conversation going” by engaging with our attendees in a more personal way. In each of these classes\, we will have 10-15 attendees and provide direct feedback on images. We encourage photographers of all skill levels to consider these classes\, as they will build upon your experience and provide an excellent chance to work on your imagery! \nSpeedlights 101 and Beyond!\nThis class is all about two things: Learning how to use the basics of your flash on the camera and how (and why) to take the flash off the camera.\nJoin Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson as we discuss how to take pictures using a speedlight\, and make them look great\, no matter what the situation. We will discuss photographing people\, but also photographing product and flashes work. We’ll talk all about the basics\, including modes\, settings\, and more!\nWhether you own a flash and have no idea how to use it\, you want to take great photos at functions and family events that are in low light\, or you just want to learn how to add a flash into your repertoire\, this course is for you! \nIn week one\, we will look at the basic camera and flash settings when using the flash on the camera\, including light positioning. In week two\, we will get a bit more creative by adding in diffusion and reflectors. We will also work to refine flash positioning and camera settings to maximize efficiency. In week three\, we will demonstrate taking the flash off-camera and show some of the benefits of doing that. In week four\, we will tie together the whole process\, including how to properly edit photos. \nEach week we will have a general presentation and discussion about a topic and will present an assignment. You can submit for the assignment or just watch our weekly critiques of others–it’s up to you! We will also supplement the class with additional instructional videos. \nYou don’t need to know the inner workings of your flash to take this class! Photographers of all levels should apply\, even those at a basic level\, as we will cascade the learning process. You should have a speedlight\, aka a flash that is detachable from your camera. Flash triggers can be helpful. A reflector may also be helpful. Note: This is not a class about the on-board flash on your camera. In general\, we never recommend using the on-board flash (unless you absolutely have to). \nPhotographers should have an understanding of their camera and general exposure before taking this class. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 48 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \nLayout of the class\nThe class will begin promptly at the time listed. SUMMARY:Online: Printed Vision Series- Printing in Black & White
DESCRIPTION:Recommended prerequisite: \nInstructor: Paul Nelson \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run.\nAbout The Printed Vision Series\nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product\, which is the purpose behind the Printed Vision Series.\nEach Printed Vision topic will meet for two sessions. In the first session\, we will discuss the topic and elaborate on editing with examples. This will include discussion of exposure\, dynamic range and color\, but also deeper points\, such as noise reduction\, image sharpening and grain. In between sessions 1 and 2\, attendees will independently process 1-2 images and submit them to the instructor for printing. We will print one of the two images leading into the second session and discuss some of the challenges we face in printing them.\nYou do not need to produce a new image for this class and can go into your archives to print\, but you are welcome to go out into the field and create something new based on the topic! \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing in Black & White\nBlack & White printing has an historic place in photography\, as for the past 175 years\, it has been the dominant method of printing and viewing photographs. There are many things to think about when we edit an image for printing in Black & White\, and this course will discuss those many items.\nIn this session\, we will discuss different paper options\, what to look for in the editing process\, and more. Our instructional online presentation will be held on June 8th from 7-8pm and we will reconvene for our Printed Image Review on June 24th from 7-9pm. You will have that time period in between to photograph and/or edit your images. In the end\, you will receive a 12×18″ print on fine art Baryta paper. (Please note: The cost of a 12×18 or 13×19 print on fine art paper is $35-$40; the cost of this class includes the cost of that print!) \nReceiving Your Print\nAfter the class\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 24 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don’t worry about taking unending notes. SUMMARY:Online: Beyond the Basics- Understanding Manual Exposure
DESCRIPTION:Recommended prerequisite: \nBasic understanding of Aperture\, Shutter\, ISO & What Exposure is \nBeginner Photography understanding \nInstructor: Emily Hojnowski \nClass Level: Beyond Basic \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nAfter learning “the basics” of digital photography\, become more comfortable in the world of digital photography by taking the next step.\nFor some photographers\, there is only the manual mode. But why is it important to shoot in the Manual mode? Are there reasons to use manual vs. Aperture priority and vice-versa? How can we maximize usability?\nWhile our Beginner class scratches the surface of these functions\, our Beyond the Basics class goes over in-depth:\n-Your Camera’s Light Meter and how it works\n-Use of Aperture Priority vs. Manual modes\n-Histograms\n-Photographing in RAW vs. Jpeg\nUnderstanding the full-functionality of your camera is a necessity to improving your flexibility when photographing in a variety of situations. This course is designed to help you feel more comfortable about how to change your camera’s settings in those situations. It is recommended as a follow-up to our Beginner Photography course. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class.
If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure! During each class\, you are welcome to type in questions in the Question box if you have specific questions as they are asked. We will do our best to answer those questions\, but if not\, feel free to ask them at the end. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don’t worry about taking unending notes. We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. In addition to this\, we will generally send out a PDF of the presentation (when applicable) and handouts on the topic. If handouts and PDFs are included\, we will send it out with the link for the video. \nNo online classes should be shared and cannot be shared in a public environment\, including with camera clubs\nThe online content is the copyright of Hunt’s Photo Education and/or the Instructor. SUMMARY:Online: Printed Vision Series- Back in Black- Printing Nightscapes
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Paul Nelson \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run.\nAbout The Printed Vision Series\nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing Nightscapes\nNightscapes can be some of the most beautiful images when printed. They possess not only deep\, rich blacks that shine through on the paper\, but also high levels of contrast and can also present an incredible level of rich color. There’s a lot to be proud of when hanging a Nightscape on our wall!\nIn this session\, we will delve into printing nightscapes\, including different paper options\, what details to look for when choosing an image\, and elements of image processing. Specifically\, we’ll look at details such image sharpening\, noise reduction\, grain\, exposure\, and color management. Our instructional online presentation will be held on July 7th from 7-8pm and we will reconvene for our Printed Image Review on July 21st from 7-8:30pm. You will have that time period in between to photograph and/or edit your images. In the end\, you will receive a 12×18″ print on fine art paper. (Please note: The cost of a 12×18 or 13×19 print on fine art paper is $35-$40; the cost of this class includes the cost of that print!)\nThe Printed Vision classes are an excellent opportunity to learn more about not only about printing\, but also the processing of images at a much more focused level. Recommended for everyone: Beginners to Advanced Photographers. Come join us for a lot of fun! \nReceiving Your Print\nAfter the class\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 48 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! SUMMARY:Online: Personal Vision Series- Pieces of Things
DESCRIPTION:Below the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education as we help grow your knowledge\, creativity\, and artistic expression with our expanded Personal Vision Series. These classes are designed to provide you time\, opportunity\, and guidance in shaping your creative photographic voice. We will give an overview on a specific topic in an online class session\, then give you time to go into the field by yourself (or with someone else\, if you choose) to complete an assignment based on that topic. We will reconvene a few days later for an online image review to discuss elements of your images.\nThe Personal Vision Series is a crossroads of many different ideas that we offer with Hunt’s Photo Education: Topic-based instruction/classes\, Photo Walks\, & Image Reviews. However\, unlike a Photo Walk where we will all take a certain direction\, for the “Walk” portion\, you will be asked to journey out on your own to photograph. SUMMARY:Online: Beyond the Basics- Low Light and Night Photography

Despite the limitations of darkness there is still great detail and color to be captured through your lenses. Low light photography is equally challenging\, but requires a completely different set of techniques. This course specifically covers these two very different yet aesthetically beautiful types of photography. While our Beginner class scratches the surface of these functions\, this Beyond the Basics class covers the following topics in Low-Light and Night Photography:\n• Exposure\, Focusing\, Settings\, Subject Matter\, and Gear\n• RAW vs. Jpeg shooting\n• Aperture Priority vs. Manual\n• Live View and Manual Focus \nUnderstanding the full-functionality of your camera is a necessity to improving your flexibility when photographing in a variety of situations. The majority of the class–roughly 1 hour– will be a presentation on the topic\, followed by a short Q&A. During the class\, you are welcome to type in questions in the Chat box if you have specific questions as they are asked.
There is no photographic media that can capture the full tonal range that our eyes can see. Thanks to the digital world we can now create full tonal images through HDR. HDR imagery is the process of capturing multiple images at various exposures (bracketing) and then using software to combine these images to create a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image. Join Lewis Kemper to learn how to use HDR to create realistic dynamic full tonal range images. \nAbout Lewis: LEWIS KEMPER is widely recognized as a photographer\, writer\, and instructor\, lecturing throughout the United States. He currently is a Contributing Editor to Outdoor Photographer. His books include “Ancient Ancestors of the Southwest”\, published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing; “Capturing the Light”\, which won the People’s Choice Awards in Fine Art in the 2009 Photography.Book.Now competition; and “Photographing Yosemite Digital Field Guide”\, which was voted in the top 20 field guides. Lewis’ training videos have been used by thousands of photographers\, helping them with their photographic and post-processing skills. SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Editing in Adobe Lightroom Classic
DESCRIPTION:Recommended prerequisite: This class is solely on editing and processing your images in Lightroom. We recommend having understanding of how file organization in Lightroom works\, so we recommend our online File Management in Lightroom course prior to taking this class. \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for our new Multi-Session Series. In each of these classes\, we will have limited attendees and provide direct feedback on images. We encourage photographers of all skill levels to consider these classes\, as they will build upon your experience and provide an excellent chance to work on your imagery! \nEditing in Adobe Lightroom\nThis is a great opportunity to build up your editing skills in Lightroom!\nAdobe Lightroom is the choice program for professionals and amateurs\, with ever-growing capabilities and options. However\, there are many levels to understanding in the program. What do we do to make basic changes? Once we learn those changes\, how can we “step it up” and figure out what to we’re supposed to do? How do we make images pop? And finally\, how do we put it all together and making finishing touches to our images.\nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for this three-week course that helps answer many of these questions. What’s most important about this course is that we will give weekly editing assignments\, and we will review those edits at the start of the following week. Often\, Lightroom users struggle with the inability to determine what changes are “good” or “correct”. While those terms are subjective\, we will help you along in the editing process to see how to make determinations along the way.\nIn week one\, we’ll talk about file types and adjustment ranges using Basic Development controls. More than anything\, we will be emphasizing global changes and understanding what can be done with an image in Lightroom. In week two\, we’ll dive into Color\, Curves\, Contrast & Clarity & Texture. These changes will help make your images pop. Finally\, in week three\, we’ll discuss advanced editing\, including Sharpening\, HDR\, Pano stitching and more.\nEach week\, we will give an assignment and students will upload their edited photos prior to the next class. We will\, by and large\, be working with your images in the class. \nThis class is strongly recommended for anyone either looking to just get started with editing\, or to fine-tune your editing skills! \nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 24 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \nLayout of the class\nThe class will begin promptly at the time listed. SUMMARY:Online: The Printed Vision- Printing Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Presentation: Wednesday August 4th\, 7-8pm • Online! \nPrinted Image Review: Wednesday August 18th\, 7-9pm • You can either attend the image review at our Hunt’s Photo Melrose location or watch online! \nInstructor: Paul Nelson \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run.\nAbout The Printed Vision Series\nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing Landscapes\nLandscapes are easily some of the most sought-after images in photography. We all have a vision of stunning landscape photographs: Sweeping clouds filled with tender gradation atop a blue sky; a path leading into a forest of lush greenery; monochrome mountains adjacent to a foreboding sky\, all reflecting in a still pool of water. All of these images can evoke\, but seeing a digital representation of a landscape can only present so much of an image. A photograph\, when properly edited and printed\, will be able to fully display the range of blues and greens or embrace the full dynamic range of black and white.\nThat’s where our Printed Vision class comes in. This session\, we will delve into printing landscapes. We’ll discuss color management through the process of editing and also look at best practices when working with monochrome. We’ll also look at refining elements in a print\, such as image sharpening and noise reduction. As always\, we will discuss basic elements as well\, including how to choose the appropriate image\, how to properly exposure\, different paper options\, and more! Our instructional online presentation will be held on August 4th from 7-8pm and we will reconvene for our Printed Image Review on August 18th from 7-8:30pm. The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don’t worry about taking unending notes. We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. \nRegister here\n***Having trouble registering? SUMMARY:Online: Personal Vision Series- Celebrating Summer
DESCRIPTION:Recommended prerequisite: \nInstructor: Don Toothaker \nClass Size: Limited to 8 attendees \nBelow the course description (but before registration) will be a short explanation on how the class will run. This will cause you to be the driving force of your creativity and vision!\nThis week’s topic is Celebrating Summer. We will have an instructional online presentation during our first session and will reconvene for our Image Review during our second session. You will have that time period in between to photograph and edit our assignment.\nYour personal creative voice is critical to your growth as a photographer and as an artist. The first step to creating a great print is by understanding how to create a great photograph in the field.\nCapture-To-Print is an intermediate workshop that focuses not only on photography\, but also editing and printing! Half photo workshop\, half editing and printing\, we will take you through the whole process–from Capture to Print— to demonstrate what is important in the field\, how to effectively process photos\, and why printing is a necessity. \nAbout this workshop\nWe will begin at the South Boston Waterfront\, also known as the “Seaport District”. This area of constant expansion holds the beautiful ICA Boston- Institute of Contemporary Art; the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center; one of the first modern “Innovation Districts”; the Harpoon Brewery and Taproom; and many hotels and nearly one hundred restaurants. There’s so much to photograph\, from architecture to people to details to long exposures and will give us an excellent\, diverse body of work that we can use to find images that we want to print. \nAfter the workshop\, attendees will edit their photos on their own and upload 2-3 images to the instructors for review. We will review those edits\, individually discuss your editing choices and make suggestions for additional edits\, then print the images as 12×18″ on fine art paper. We will conclude the workshop the following week with a printed image review. We will hold the review in our Melrose store\, but if you cannot attend this\, you will also be able to watch it online. (The session will also be recorded if you cannot make it to the online session live.) \nThis will be a fun and challenging workshop that will walk you through the full process of creating a print\, from capture to edit to print. The process of printing is integral to developing one’s photographic vision. \nReceiving Your Print\nAfter the class\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations. \nRegister here\n***Having trouble registering? You can also register by clicking here! \n\nIf you are attending this workshop\, we will send out more specific instructions to you a few days prior to the workshop. Please note: Some slight details above can be subject to change. This email will detail any of those minor changes. \nPlease read Hunt’s Terms & Conditions before signing up. \nDress and Gear \n•Make sure to dress accordingly with the most current weather report.\n•Consider bringing wide angle or standard zoom lenses\, and a telephoto zoom lens\n•A prime lens (or even a macro) may also suit you well.\n•You are welcome to bring Neutral Density (ND) filters\n•You can bring a telephoto zoom lens\, but be advised to bring only what you want to carry.\n•Make sure to bring your tripod with a quick release plate and a shutter release\, if you have one.\n•Feel free to bring snacks and water\, and a flashlight will likely help as well.\n•Bring an extra camera battery and memory cards.\n•As always\, bring your enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

We will do our best to answer those questions\, but if not\, feel free to ask them at the end. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. In addition to this\, we will generally send out a PDF of the presentation (when applicable) and handouts on the topic.
