Wild Horses have occupied this mountainous region of Utah since the late 1800’s. The herd is approximately 200 – 250 horses and is the largest herd of wild horses in the west. Mares and stallions average around 800 to 1000 pounds. The colors within the herd are brown\, bay\, paint\, sorrel\, roan\, buckskin\, black\, palomino\, and gray. The variety is endless due to the frequent breeding within the herd. There are many foal\, yearlings and colts that roam with the herd. The horses are in good condition and are frequently seen in the vicinity of the Pony Express Trail in the valley floor. On this workshop\, we will photograph the wild horses as well as other local scenes and wildlife.\nOn this workshop\, you will want to bring a variety of lenses\, from wide-angle to super-telephoto. The distance to your subjects can vary\, as the horses can be right next to you or far in the distance\, but it is certainly recommended to consider bringing a super-telephoto in the range of 500-600mm. The Smokies are renowned for their diversity of nature\, abundant plant and wildlife\, rushing streams\, and ancient mountains. The month of April reveals many beautiful aspects of Spring throughout the park as we explore and pursue a variety of subject matter. In Cades Cove\, we will explore the cultural elements of the mountain people. Along Tremont\, we will expand our creativity by photographing rushing water and quiet landscapes. Throughout the park there is an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife to enjoy. From the top of Clingman’s Dome\, we will capture mountain vista’s that are breathtaking. Each day\, we will work on concepts of Subject Development\, Exposure\, Image Composition\, Architectural Photography\, Black and White Photography\, Low Light Photography\, and Long Exposures. There is nothing quite like the Great Smoky Mountains.\nWe will maximize our time in the field with hands on instruction as well as incorporating group discussion\, classroom instruction\, and image review during the workshop. It’s important to fully understand the “why” and “how” of your camera settings\, and learning to master manual is an excellent way to do so. \nThis Multi-Session Series will focus on Mastering Manual Mode. In week 1\, we’ll cover the technical side of aperture\, shutter\, and ISO. We’ll also discuss metering modes\, reading your meter\, and understanding histograms.
