Posing and Directing
Everyone wants to make wonderful photos of their family and friends to present them in a natural and relaxed way. The two biggest challenges facing portrait photographers are how to guide the subject into a pleasing and effective pose, and communicating and directing them to achieve real expressions. This class covers how to pose individuals and couples, and also demonstrates effective communication methods to help your subjects feel at ease. Posing techniques are examined for both male and female subjects, headshots, ¾ and full length, and couples including engagement photos.
This workshop is designed for those wishing to establish a better rapport with their subject and is open to any skill level. We will shoot models so the participants have reference photos and experience directing.
One day workshop 9-6
9 am: Class overview, student intros, image presentation and shooting demos on posing .
12-1: Break for lunch
1 pm: Models arrive and prepare
1:30- 5:00: Students photograph models in studio in several different lighting scenarios
5:00 -6:00 We wrap up with a brief lesson in post-production for portraits.
Students must be familiar with their cameras and lenses and basic photography technique.
A medium telephoto lens is suggested.
The Simple Headshot
Everyone needs a good headshot!
The photographer needs to possess the lighting, posing, and communication skills to create that “good headshot” consistently, on demand. Client needs include business, social media, actors/performers/authors, editorial, beauty, and sometimes just a great shot to give to mom, or a significant other! This workshop will cover lighting, both flattering and effective, posing for maximum impact, choosing color or black and white, and how to set the mood. Communication skills for helping your subject relax and be authentic, and also for guiding them to expressions that match the mood and lighting are explored in detail. These valuable skills help you raise your level of portraiture for all purposes.
There is a lot of detail to attend to, so the truth is, there is no such thing as a simple headshot!
