The Art and Craft of Bird Photography, with Mike Milicia and Shawn Carey

Shawn Carey and Michael Milicia will lead this one-day seminar crammed with tips and techniques that will help bring your avian imagery to the next level.

Topics will include fieldcraft, composition, exposure, autofocus, histograms, minimizing noise, camera setup, flight photography, and a brief primer on getting started with video. There will also be a discussion about bird photography hot spots in New England and beyond, as well as some tips for traveling with your gear.

The program will close with a general Q&A session. The content and presentation will be suitable for beginners as well as more experienced bird photographers.

Please note: This event is lecture-based and will go very deep into discussion about how and where to best photograph. However, there will be no photographing. To conserve on space, please keep any gear that you are bringing to a minimum. We would recommend only a camera, a notepad and pen. There is no need to bring a tripod or any extensive lenses.

Mike is a Massachusetts-based wildlife photographer who specializes in birds. He began his professional photography career in 2005 after working 27 years as a Software Engineer. In May 2011, he was invited to join Shoot The Light as an instructor and workshop leader.

Atlantic Puffin : Látrabjarg Cliffs : IcleandMike’s work has been featured in numerous juried art fairs and exhibits throughout New England, including the prestigious Paradise City Arts Festival. Eleven of his images have been selected for the North American Nature Photography Association’s annual showcases including a Top 10 image in 2012 and three of his images have been honored in the Audubon Magazine Photography Awards including a Top 3 placement in the Professional category. He has also garnered many “Image of the Week” honors on various online forums.

His engineering background makes him especially adept at communicating complex subjects in a well organized, step by step manner that proves to be very effective for photography students at all levels.

Shawn P. Carey (Migration Productions) produce bird/wildlife related Multi-media Presentations that have been presented at many natural history events all over the United States.
Biographical information: Shawn Carey moved for his home in Erie, Pennsylvania October 1986 to Cambridge and started watching birds in 1988. Already with an interest in photography and now birds Shawn began to combine the two in 1991. _G4F0200By 1994 he and good friend Jim Grady started Migration Productions as a way to present their multi-image slide presentations to a live audience. Migration Productions has been presenting programs to birding organizations, natural history events and camera clubs since 1994. (Mass. Audubon, ABA, Manomet, HMANA, Eastern Mass Hawk Watch and many local bird clubs). Migration Productions offers the finest quality bird/wildlife programs with stunning photographs, video, sound tracks, and interviews with many people that are involved with bird watching. Shawn’s photographs have been published in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Science magazine, Mass Audubon Sanctuary Magazine and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary just to name a few.
