Beginner Photography in the Field: Castle Island, Boston

Class Description
Learning about photography can be a real challenge. There are so many pieces to the puzzle of photography, some of which use confusing terminology. And while we also offer other wonderful Beginner Photography classes to get you started, nothing is truly the same as hands-on in-the-field! It’s important to fully understand the “why” and “how” of your camera settings.

In this outdoor, hands-on class, you’ll learn all about the basics of photography. We will discuss Exposure (how light works with the camera), the Big Three Settings (Aperture, Shutter Speed, & ISO), how they affect your picture and how to set them, and what mode to set it to on your camera! We’ll discuss changing depth-of-field (controlling what’s in focus in the background), stopping or blurring the action in your scene, and many other basic picture-taking techniques. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about your camera in a fun and safe environment! Join us to strengthen your photographic knowledge!

In this session of Beginner Photography in the Field…
…we will be going to Castle Island in South Boston. Jutting out into the Boston Harbor from South Boston lies the unique and beautiful Castle Island, along with one of its main attractions, the historic Fort Independence. During the summer months, the boulevard that guides you around the strip of land buzzes with activity. Fort Independence overlooks the entire area on a hilltop. With a 360-degree hillside view and panoramas onto the bay and into Boston, as well as the lively activity, Castle Island is breathtaking in the summer months. This is an excellent area to learn about photography with a variety of fine-details and interesting scenes that can lead to terrific photographs.

A Guideline for our in-person workshops during the era of COVID-19
Hunt’s Photo Education remains dedicated to the health and safety of every single attendee, student, and customer, first and foremost. We also are committed to the best possible learning experience. We have put forth rules and guidelines for Photo Workshops that occur during the era of COVID.
•We will have no more than 6-8 attendees per Photo Workshop with a single instructor
•We ask that all attendees wear a mask. (Please make sure the mask covers your mouth and nose.)
•We ask that all attendees socially distance 6 feet from one another, unless you are attending with the other person
•Hunt’s Photo Educators will be unable to physically handle others’ cameras
•Consider bringing sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer
•If you are sick or feeling unwell, stay home! We will gladly give you credit towards a future class!

Dress and Gear

•Make sure to dress accordingly with the most current weather report.
•Make sure to bring your camera and any lenses you want to use. 1-2 lenses should be fine, but but be advised to bring only what you want to carry.
•Bring an extra camera battery (make sure to charge it!) and memory cards.
•You are welcome to bring a tripod, but you don’t need to.
•Feel free to bring snacks and water.
•As always, bring your enthusiasm and creative thoughts!

•There are bathrooms located on the premises of Castle Island
•There is a large parking lot next to Castle Island. Parking is free and generally very open in the morning.
