Class Level: Beyond Basic
Join photographers Bobbi Lane and Lee Varis (“The Mistress of Light” and “The Sultan of Skin”) for one or two days of their exciting workshops that will get you more involved with your subjects and give you more of a mastery of technique! You may register for the first day, the second day, or both to receive a discounted rate! (Registration will follow the second class description.)
This weekend workshop provides the photographer with a solid foundation of studio lighting. This foundation course teaches essential and creative lighting techniques so that the photographer can use the light effectively to describe the subject and set the mood to create stronger and more meaningful portraits. It will be taught with studio strobes, but the techniques apply to portable flash and natural light as well.
Students can take either or both days. They may enroll in the second day only if they have the experience that is covered in the first day. Each day is limited to 12 students.
Saturday- Foundations: Direction, Quality and Depth
The first day of our workshop shows how to use one studio strobe light and gives you the understanding and technique to work with “The Big Three”; Lighting Patterns, modifiers (Umbrellas, Soft Boxes, Grids, etc.) and controlling shadows. These aspects of light are what define your subject and set the mood. It is important to understand each aspect separately and learn how to combine them to match your concept.
The morning covers how strobes work, how to properly set up stands and lights, take readings for correct exposure, and lots of hands on experience with the equipment.
The afternoon will be demos of the quality, lighting patterns and use of reflectors to control the shadows. All portraits on just this day will be taken using only 1 light. The participants will photograph each other and practice the techniques.
Sunday: One, Two and Three Lights
The second day of our workshop shows the set up and use of one to three lights and how to decide when to add an additional light. We show how to decide the overall look, how to balance the exposure of additional lights in relation to the main light, and control the tonality of the background.
The morning will be demos of the beauty and power of just one light with reflectors, then add the second light as a hair light or background light, how to create high and low key portraits, and the classic three light set up for portraits.
The afternoon will consist of photographing models in different set ups.
