What is the Snowy Owl Project? Let me tell you a bit about it.
Snowy Owls are nomadic owls moving south in the fall looking for a place that resembles their home in the Arctic Tundra. Logan Airport with 1800 acres of open grassland habitat and lots of small mammals and birds to eat is a place that attracts them each winter. As you can image, this is a potential problem for both the owls and the aircraft. Norman Smith, Director of Mass Audubon’s Blue Hills Trailside Museum has been studying these owls since 1981. He captures and relocates them, examines, bands and on some owls attaches satellite transmitter’s bands to track their travels.
