When I first began taking photographs in 1986, I proclaimed myself a “Nature Photographer”. My interest in photography stemmed from my love of exploring the outdoors.
I admired every aspect of nature and I was determined to replicate the many amazing images I saw in magazines such as Outdoor Photographer. Today, many years later, I happily proclaim that my goal is to be the best photographer I can be with no preference to any particular genre. Nonetheless, I still seek every opportunity to photograph wildlife whenever possible. I am in awe of the grace and power of nature’s creatures. Owl’s are a particular favorite of mine.
Right now New England is experiencing a significant influx of Snowy Owls. These magnificent raptors call the Arctic Tundra home but, relocate when competition for food resources increases. Hunger drives them south. The beautiful beaches and sand dunes of New England may somewhat resemble their natural habitat but, they are here out of necessity not choice. Many of the current Snowy Owls are young and hungry. Photographing and observing wildlife is exciting and fascinating but, we must do so with concern for their well being.
To be the best photographers we can be means being the best naturalists and environmentalists we can be. Take the time to know your subject and you will be rewarded with more than just inspiring photographs. Observe and learn the behavior patterns of wild animals and you will gain respect for their beauty. If we do not take care of Mother Nature, and all of her creatures, we will destroy all they have to offer. We cannot photograph what is not here; it’s as simple as that.
The Snowy Owl is one of the most beautiful, noble animals I have ever seen. I hope many people get to see one of these magnificent animals this winter. It is my greater hope that everyone treats them with the respect they deserve.
